The Veress needle is a specialized trocar instrument utilized in laparoscopic surgery for establishing the initial pneumoperitoneum. Functioning as the "gateway device" in laparoscopic procedures, its primary objective is to safely penetrate the abdominal wall through blind insertion, thereby creating a pathway for subsequent carbon dioxide insufflation to establish the operative space.
Core Features and Values
· Safety Assurance: The blunt-tip spring-loaded mechanism serves as the primary safeguard against iatrogenic injuries during penetration.
· Precision and Ease of Operation: The sharp needle tip combined with clear tactile feedback ensures rapid and accurate penetration, with a relatively shallow learning curve.
· Efficient Pneumoperitoneum Establishment: The lateral port design facilitates rapid formation of the initial pneumoperitoneum, preparing the surgical field for subsequent trocar placement.
Pre-use inspection: Check the appearance, spring stylet, control valve and Luer connector before use. Test the inner blunt stylet to ensure smooth spring rebound without jamming.
Connect tubing: Attach the Luer hub of the Veress needle to the insufflation tube of CO₂ insufflator and test gas patency.
Puncture: Make a small skin incision (usually at umbilicus). Insert the Veress needle slowly at a proper angle through the abdominal wall.
Peritoneal penetration: A distinct “give” feeling indicates penetration of peritoneum. The spring-loaded blunt stylet pops forward automatically to cover the sharp outer cannula to protect intra-abdominal organs.
Intraperitoneal confirmation: Confirm correct intraperitoneal position by saline drop test, aspiration test or low-flow insufflation. Do not start high-volume gas insufflation before confirmation.
Establish pneumoperitoneum: Insufflate CO₂ until the target intra-abdominal pressure is achieved. Remove the needle once trocar is ready.
Post-use processing: Clean tissue and blood residue thoroughly, dry, pack and autoclave for reuse.
Perform puncture gently. Never apply excessive force. Higher risk for patients with prior abdominal surgery, adhesions or obese body habitus.
Verify spring function every time. DO NOT use the Veress needle if the blunt stylet fails to spring forward, which may cause visceral or vascular injury.
Never insufflate large gas volume before confirming intraperitoneal placement. Misplacement may lead to subcutaneous emphysema or bowel injury.
Start with low gas flow and monitor pressure continuously. Stop insufflation immediately if pressure rises abnormally fast.
This reusable 304 stainless steel Veress needle is only suitable for autoclave sterilization. Improper disinfection may damage the instrument.
Clean the instrument right after surgery to prevent tissue debris from drying and causing jamming. Store in dry and protective case to avoid deformation.
It is designed for closed pneumoperitoneum establishment only, not for Hassan open access technique.
Clinical assessment is required for patients with severe intra-abdominal adhesions or distension; alternative access methods may be selected.
